Lazarus, Come Out: Hope After Trauma

Standard trauma treatment can help a client regulate and recover, so what does faith add? Fr. David Songy, PsyD, LP, offers a way to integrate a client's Catholic faith into any trauma treatment, building on sound assessment and on knowing when to refer to a trauma-specific program. Drawing on Catholic anthropology, he shows how to respond to thoughts like 'I am permanently damaged' or 'I am not lovable', how to understand forgiveness as something received from God, and how to distinguish post-traumatic growth and redemptive suffering from spiritualizing. You'll see how to work alongside spiritual directors and clergy as an ambassador of hope.

What You’ll Learn

01

Distinguish

Distinguish PTSD from chronic trauma presentations and determine when a client needs a trauma-specific program rather than individual counseling.

02

Apply

Apply Catholic anthropology to challenge trauma-related beliefs such as being permanently damaged, unlovable, or abandoned by God.

03

Identify

Identify faith resources for trauma recovery, including healing of memories, spiritual direction, and forgiveness, and recognize when spiritualizing becomes avoidance.
