Faith Is Not Off Limits in the Therapy Room

Is it appropriate, or even ethical, to bring a client's faith into psychotherapy? Thomas Plante, PhD, ABPP, opens the Catholic Christian Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy program with the case for doing so. In an interview with Harold Koenig, MD, one of the founders of the field, you'll hear what more than thirty years of research says about religion, spirituality, and health. Dr. Plante then sets out the ethical ground: respect for religious diversity, competence, and avoiding harm. You'll also see how a brief, patient-centered spiritual history tells clients their faith is welcome without imposing it.
